School Painting Case Study:
Westfield Community Schools Field House
No Overtime Needed: Westfield’s Field House Painting Stayed on Schedule
Legacy Painting’s work had to fit into the larger renovation and the district’s fixed summer schedule. The project was coordinated with Westfield’s facilities team and Athletics Director, both of whom needed the space ready before summer practices and basketball camps resumed.
Westfield had previously hired Legacy for classroom and hallway projects. After seeing how Legacy communicated and managed those jobs, the district trusted the company to handle the more complex field house project without oversight from a general contractor or construction manager.
The challenge:
Working Above a Newly Finished Court on a Complex Jobsite
Other contractors were completing their portions of the renovation at the same time. Legacy needed to coordinate its work around changing jobsite conditions and make minor scheduling adjustments without allowing them to affect the larger project.
If painting ran late or the floor was damaged, the consequences extended beyond construction. Basketball camps and summer practices could have been disrupted.
The approach:
Legacy began with a site walk and conversations with the district’s stakeholders to understand the scope, schedule, access requirements and conditions crews would encounter. That discovery process helped determine the equipment, staffing and work plan needed before mobilization.
Protect Other Contractor’s Work
Legacy used specialized lift equipment to reach the upper portions of the field house and installed floor protection beneath the work area. Equipment movement was planned around the newly finished court so crews could complete the aerial work without putting another major part of the renovation at risk.
Manage the Jobsite Day to Day
A Legacy employee Project Manager visited the site daily to monitor progress, coordinate with other trades and address the minor schedule changes that come with a renovation of this size. That oversight allowed adjustments to happen while issues were still manageable instead of waiting until they threatened the schedule.
Keep Athletics Informed
Legacy already had an established relationship with Westfield’s facilities team, but the Athletics Director had not worked with the company before. With the AD’s office next to the field house, Legacy kept athletics updated throughout the project.
Those conversations gave the Athletics Director direct visibility into the work instead of asking him to rely only on the facilities team’s previous experience with Legacy.
The outcome:
At the final walkthrough, the facilities and athletics teams found no paint touch-ups or additional cleanup that needed to be completed. The field house was ready for Westfield to put back into use.
The project also showed the district that the process Legacy had demonstrated on smaller classroom and hallway jobs could scale to a more complex facility. Westfield could entrust Legacy with the painting scope, stay informed about progress and focus on the larger renovation taking place around it.
