WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A PROFESSIONAL PAINT JOB

PROFESSIONALISM

If a painting contractor does not show up on time, communicate clearly, or look professional it can create doubts in your mind of the work they will do on your home. So beyond timeliness and professionalism, here is what to look for in a written quote and as your project is being performed:

1. PREPARATION

A professional painter will always power-wash all surfaces before painting and then scrape any loose or peeling paint. This cleans dirt and debris from the surface and removes old paint that would cause premature failure if new paint was applied over it.

2. PREPARATION

A professional painter will always caulk any cracks or gaps in wood joints to seal out moisture. Special caulks can also be used for joints where windows, doors, and/or wood trim meet brick or stone surfaces. Normal caulk will not adhere to brick or stone very well and silicone will look messy and can not be painted over.

3. PREPARATION

A professional painter will use a primer on any bare spots or new wood before applying a topcoat. This is called spot priming. Sometimes an older surface will a lot of peeling paint will need a prime coat applied to the entire surface. This is called full priming. If you are painting brick or block for the first time, special primers are needed before applying a topcoat.

4. PREPARATION

A professional painter will protect by using the proper masking tape/paper/plastic, drop cloths, and shielding tools to make sure over-spray and paint drips don’t end up on unwanted surfaces.

5. SAFETY

A professional painter will keep safety first by using the proper equipment to keep the job site safe and efficient. This can include ladders, walk boards, scaffolding, and spraying equipment. Sometimes lift equipment will be rented and used to get to hard to reach places.

6. APPLICATION

Whether you are painting a home or commercial property, professional painting is a skilled trade. A professional painting company will use EXPERTS to spray, roll, and brush the topcoat paint. The application will depend on the surface and sometimes on weather conditions. Spraying does not thin the paint. A pro will use spray equipment where they can save you time and money.
