Deck Coating Removal and Staining

This is a Plainfield, IN deck staining project where a few years ago a common deck coating was applied. It’s unfortunate that we often find many homeowners with similar stories – they applied a deck coating that was supposed to last 15-20 or even 25 years and it begins peeling after only 1-2 years.

To Replace Or Not To Replace

The customer contacted us to see if A) we could even remove it and B) how much would it cost to replace all the whole deck. After examination and previously working one similar deck coatings, we were confident we could remove 98% of it and there was no need to replace any of the wood decking.  The customer was skeptical of our confidence and really felt we would never get this coating off the wood, but with nothing else to lose, they allowed us to do some test areas on the deck. The test areas turned out great and the customer gave us the green light.

Let The Deck Restoration Begin

As you can see in the pictures, the deck started off in pretty rough shape, but the wood was still in great condition – no rot and no wood needed replacing.

The customer went with our recommendation to use Sikkens Solid Color Wood Stain on their deck, which is a 2 coat system, and the color they chose was “246 Terra Cotta.” It was similar to the color they previously had on the deck, plus it matched some of the brick work next to the deck.

The result turned out great!  The customer was very pleased with how the project turned out. It felt as though they had a whole new deck without having to replace a single piece of wood decking or even railing. Replacing the whole deck, which was the customers fear, would have cost them twice what it costs to remove the coating and apply 2 coats of Sikkens Solid Color Stain.

As always, it’s important to properly clean and prep the wood to allow the stain to bond well and provide a long lasting stain.
