Indy Deck Refinishing – PPG ProLuxe RUBBOL Hazelnut
This deck has taken a beating from the weather over the years and most recently, woodpeckers. Homeowners knew they needed their deck refinished, but did not want to use what was used last time they had the deck stained. We discussed their options and they chose to go with PPG ProLuxe RUBBOL.
Furthermore, the deck needed to have some wood spindles replaced due to woodpeckers. The spindles were unique because they measured exactly 2 inches by 2 inches. Normally when you order/install 2×2 spindles, they do not measure 2 inches by 2 inches – however, these spindles do. The majority of building supply companies (Lowes, Home Depot, Menards, 84 Lumber, etc) do not sell nominal wood and haven’t for many years. Some may be able to order nominal wood, but most don’t usually carry it on hand. Thankfully, Indiana Hardwood (a local lumber mill) in Martinsville was able to help with the unique spindle requirements.
How We Stained The Deck
The deck was in overall great shape. Even though the deck stain was peeling really bad, they have done a great job at keeping it protected, so no wood needed to be replaced outside of the woodpecker damage.
Before we stained the deck, we went through our standard prep work of applying our deck stripper and cleaner followed by a pressure wash. We needed to make sure to get as much of the old stain off as possible to allow the new stain to really bond with the wood grain. It’s very important to clean and prep the wood before staining if you want a long-lasting deck stain. A normal pressure wash will not be sufficient, you will need to apply deck stripper before the pressure washing.
This deck staining project turned out great and the customer was happy with the work.
On this project, we applied PPG ProLuxe RUBBOL Solid stain in a 215 Hazelnut which went well with the existing house trim color.
